This wine comes from Block 9 in our Napa Valley Dollarhide Vineyard. The top of the block clings to a natural amphitheatre above the creek and runs downslope through some very thin soil to parallel the creek for a few hundred feet. It always ripens late, and sometimes has to be picked in multiple passes. This is a block, and Cab Franc is a grape, that can test your patience. With the right site, good canopy management and decent weather one can accommodate the vigorous nature of Cab Franc and harvest some excellent, distinctively flavored fruit.. We grow it primarily for our Red Meritage wine, Elu. On our ranch it offers bright red fruit flavors, good tannin, and a spicy/herbal character.
Focused and concentrated this Cabernet Franc has a complex aroma of anise, blackberries and cherry-cola. Very supple in texture with flavors of mocha and dark fruit . The tannins are very fine grained adding to the long finish.
