JamesSuckling.com Executive Editor Jim Gordon recently visited the winery to taste through the exceptional 2022 vintage red wines from St. Supéry Estate with Michael Scholz, Brooke Shenk and Emma Swain.
93 Points – 2022 St. Supéry Napa Valley Estate Élu A super-suave, layered and subtly spicy Bordeaux-style blend that’s packed with floral, oak spice and dark fruit flavors. Nicely layered, lightly tannic and lush on the palate. Full-bodied and balanced with soft acidity, finishing with good length. Black cherries, blueberries and baking spices linger nicely. -JG
94 Points – 2022 St. Supéry Rutherford Estate Vineyard Merlot Really pure, velvety and delicious, boasting ripe red and black fruit on a suave texture, with wonderful depth and length. Red cherries, raspberries, blackberries, cocoa and spearmint on the nose, and lavish, relaxed fruit with subtle baking spices on the palate. Full-bodied with soft tannins. -JG
96 Points – 2022 St. Supéry Rutherford Estate Vineyard RU3 Pure and juicy cherry flavors highlight this full-bodied yet elegant wine. It’s a Bordeaux-style blend sourced only from estate-grown grapes. Rich in red and black cherries, blackcurrants, raspberries, subtle spearmint and oak spices. Nicely focused and moderately tannic, offering good, mouthwatering balance. 72% cabernet sauvignon, 24% merlot and 4% petit verdot. -JG
94 Points – 2022 St. Supéry Rutherford Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon So sleek, pure and delicious, showing layers of black fruit on a fresh, balanced texture that gives great precision and lift. Significant tannins are super fine-grained, giving structure and heft without drying and setting it up well for further aging. Quite focused, elegant and linear, and then long in the finish. -JG
94 Points – 2022 St. Supéry Rutherford Estate Vineyard Cabernet Franc This is generous, elegant, deep in fruit flavors and nicely structured. Black cherries, blackberries, iron, cocoa and spearmint. Tightly packed, fresh and tangy, with medium to full tannins giving a slight bite to the palate. Built well for further aging. Drinkable now, but best from 2030. -JG
92 Points – 2022 St. Supéry Napa Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon A juicy, generous, fluid quality makes this full-bodied wine accessible and easy to sip. Attractive raspberry and red cherry aromas are followed by blackberry, sage and black olive nuances on the palate. Gentle tannins. Drink now or hold. (tasted in March) -JG
