Tasting Notes
This cabernet sauvignon presents with deep, dark reds and purples. Aromas are opulent with mocha and ripe black plum, cassis and a subtle thread of anise. A rich, dense profile follows with flavors of dark, ripe blackberry, plum and dark chocolate with a hint of black licorice. This is a serious cabernet sauvignon with integrity built to reward with time in the cellar.
Winemaking
In 2019, we experienced a very wet winter and spring, capturing 41 inches of rain at Dollarhide. A mild spring with one late-May rainfall resulted in damp soils and healthy canopy growth. Other than one mid-June heat spell, summer was warm and dry, allowing for consistent and balanced ripening. Late summer and early fall continued to provide steady warmth. As evenings began to cool, the fall growing season was extended. October became quite cold, early. It was a good even ripening season with a mild summer resulting in excellent wine of great flavor and density.
Accolades
96 Points, The Tasting Panel – “Savory, spicy and still fresh, with overtones of black olive, toasted almond, and plum and undertones of graphite and leather. Black cherry weaves through its sinewy, well-structured frame. M.M. Fall 2025
95 Points, James Suckling – “Aromas of blackcurrants, sweet tobacco, vanilla, chocolate and graphite. Hints of bay leaf, too. Tight and chewy with full body and ripe yet firm tannins. Polished and refined. Long finish with a lingering crushed-stone sensation. Needs a few years to soften, but already delicious to taste.” J.S. Feb. 2022
95 Points, Wine Enthusiast – “Relaxed in texture and impressively rich in fruit flavors, this wine opens with a mélange of mint, crushed cherries and raspberries. It then floods the palate with blackberries and blueberries interlaced with cedar, mint and cocoa accents. The wine has improved greatly over past vintages. It is rich enough to enjoy soon but concentrated enough for considerable aging.” J.G. Nov. 2023
93 Points, Decanter – “The Dollarhide Vineyard, a St Supéry estate site, has old origins as a ranch dating to the 1840s. A mélange of dark chocolate and black plums mark the aromatics with notes of Christmas spice. The palate is lush, with unctuous black fruits, spiced plums, blackberries, and black currant. There are definitive notes of mocha, espresso bean, a touch of ember, and smoky spice, but the acidity lifts the finish nicely and provides a balance and a lengthy dark chocolate note that lasts a long time. C.P. Jan. 2024
92 Points, Wine & Spirits – “St. Supéry’s estate vineyard in the eastern hills of Napa Valley produced an herbal cabernet in 2019, its scent as exotic as a compressed brick of hashish, its fruit as plush as blackberry coulis. Touches of black cherry liqueur and plum sauce mark its ripeness, as does the rich underside of tannins that keep it sweet and soft as red fruit streams out of the glass. J.G. Nov. 2023
92 Points, Wine Spectator – “Shows black cherry and blackberry compote flavors lined with a black licorice note, all backed by the polished, focused finish. Frankly fruit driven, this ripe, direct style offers good energy for balance. J.M. Feb. 2024
91 Points, Jeb Dunnuck – “The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Dollarhide Estate Vineyard is outstanding, with a blue-fruited, plum, graphite, and bouquet garni-like array on the nose as well as a medium to full-bodied style on the palate. It has good freshness, a clean, elegant mouthfeel, and a great finish.” J.D. May 2022
