Tasting Notes

2019 – The 2019 Crossroads Cabernet Sauvignon is energetic, lively, and bursting to show you everything it has to offer. This vintage expression of Cabernet Sauvignon fills your nose with black cherries, dark cocoa nib, and a hint of baked sweetness. These familiar aromas from our Oakville Estate are also found on the first sip, with a pop of ripe plum and savory cooking herbs that are reminiscent of the fresh outdoors on a trek through the Tahoe mountains. That combination of luscious fruit and fresh herbs is completed by the plush, velvety tannins on the finish. With every sip, the 2019 Crossroads Cabernet Sauvignon shows how a well-crafted companion wine should taste — balanced, structured, and unbelievably delicious. Do not hesitate to enjoy upon release!

2020 – The most discussed vintage Napa Valley has seen in recent memory, the 2020 wines from our Estates have been tasted and scrutinized more than any vintage in our history. The resulting 2020 Crossroads Cabernet Sauvignon was an absolute joy to see develop in barrel. In true Crossroads Cabernet Sauvignon expression, the fruit forward aromatics of this wine burst out of the glass with notes of sweet Bing cherries and candied plums. Intriguing threads of freshly brewed coffee, roasted herbs de Provence, and dried red earth balance the boldness of the summer fruit notes, creating a complete and elegant aromatic experience. Youthful and energetic on the palate, this wine is showing incredibly well for its age. A medley of boysenberries and tart raspberries ignite memories of summers spent hiking, finding wild brushes full of perfectly ripe treats along the path. Texturally bright and lightly dusty, the cedar and spice notes from the wine’s time in barrel is present, and perfectly balanced to add complexity and roundness to the finish. Whether we ended our hikes with a savory charcuterie plate or a summer BBQ back home, this wine pairs perfectly with great food, which will be remembered for years to come.

2022 – The 2022 Crossroads Cabernet Sauvignon opens with enchantingly forward aromas of fresh Bing cherries, rich boysenberry, and succulent plum compote. Layers of graphite and black pepper add to the aromatic depth, while subtle anise and mild barrel spice notes complete the nose. A harmonious balance of red and black fruits unfold, highlighting sweet blackberries, red and black fresh currants, and a black raspberry tart. Decadent summer plums burst into the mid-palate, restrained by a delicate hint of interwoven dried rosemary. The midpalate continues into a round and generous finish, with well-integrated oak providing structure and elegance. One is left with lingering notes of cocoa and an undertone of all-spice, leaving a polished and lasting impression. Since there is a never a wrong occasion to open this wine, we recommend inviting friends or family over to share a bottle with your favorite home cooked meal.

2023 – The 2023 Crossroads Cabernet Sauvignon opens with strikingly expressive aromas of Bing cherries and just ripe black plums. Traces of crushed gravel and freshly cracked black pepper dive into a savory tone that is lifted by subtle notes of star anise and delicately interwoven hints of allspice—both intriguing and complex upon opening. On the palate, a seamless harmony of red and black fruits unfold—layers of sweet blackberry, red and black currant, and freshly baked cherry tart. Lively red plum emerges, rounding the midpalate with delicately intertwined touches of dried rosemary and iron. The texture is supple and generous, carried by finely integrated tannins defined by dark cocoa and warm barrel spice. The 2023 Crossroads Cabernet Sauvignon is polished, yet approachable, where one can envision enjoying this now or feel lucky to find a lost bottle in the cellar 10 years down the road. Best enjoyed with an elaborate grazing board, the company of close friends and a sunset that refuses to end.

Winemaking

2019 – The beginning of the 2019 growing season had plenty of rainfall, followed by a long, warm summer that offered few extreme heat events and ample foggy mornings. The long, relatively mild finish to the season helped preserve freshness and finesse in the fruit. The Cabernet Sauvignon harvest started at the Oakville Estate on September 25th with our last picks coming in mid-October. This gradual growing season allowed for abundant hang time providing us with great color, structure, and plush tannins.

2020 – A summer with cool mornings and warm days fortuitously resulted in our earliest first pick of Cabernet Sauvignon in Rudd Estate’s history, starting on August 28th and ending on September 25th, before the Glass fire in Napa Valley started. These earlier picks, balanced with select picks of later ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, allowed us to craft a wine which captures a level of freshness while remaining true to our unique terroir in eastern Oakville.

2022 – With mild December rain, the beginning of the growing season commenced on the warmer side, leading to an early budbreak. Going into late spring and early summer, the vines showed strong shoot growth and average crop yields. A warm August led to early picks from our Oakville Estate starting on August 31st, with all fruit being harvested shortly after. Due to an unprecedented heat wave of 5 days in triple digits over the Labor Day weekend, our vineyard crew and production team worked tirelessly to pick and process the entire property in 2 weeks, with our last pick coming in on September 15th. Due to the age of our vines and meticulous farming practices, we were able to preserve freshness and structure, while keeping concentration and finesse to provide an incredible wine in a more challenging vintage.

2023 – The 2023 vintage was one of the longest growing seasons in more than a decade. With steady and mild weather throughout the season, coupled with a balanced crop load, 2023 had all the hallmarks of a memorable vintage. Winter and spring rains led to saturated soil and optimal timing for budbreak. Idyllic spring weather maintained healthy canopy growth through bloom and set, while relatively cool weather throughout the growing season allowed sugar accumulation and phenolic ripeness to occur in tandem. The first pick of Cabernet Sauvignon in Oakville occurred on September 21st, which in more recent vintages began at the beginning of September. These extra days allowed for extended ripening of sugars, acids, and tannins—a winemaker’s dream. The fruit continued to be slowly harvested by hand by our in-house vineyard crew over the next 22 days, with the final pick taking place on October 13th.
