Tasting Notes
This Cabernet Sauvignon presents incredibly dark hues of reds and purples. Black plum, black cherry and subtle cassis are enhanced with dark chocolate mocha, anise and a high toasted oak complexity. Black plum and blackberry dominate the palate profile with a subtle note of red plum, a thread of whiskey vanillin, espresso and dark toast of the barrel. This is a deep, intense brooding wine with a solid structure of fine-grain tannin, which will reward with time.
Technical Note
Winemaking
The winter of early 2013 began with little rainfall, but precipitation improved in February and March. Spring was dry and warm, the best conditions to encourage vine growth. Excellent weather continued throughout the summer with temperatures that were warm but not extreme. With one rain event in September settling the dust, harvest took place under exceptional weather conditions that resulted in phenomenal ripening of the fruit. Harvested by hand in the cool morning hours, the grapes were brought to the winery where they were hand sorted. Warm fermentation temperatures along with gentle cap maceration helped achieve the desired color and structure for the wine before an extended maceration time on the skins.
Accolades
93 Points, James Suckling – This is a ripe and savory red with plum, currants and cedar aromas that follow through to a full body, silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Dense and fresh. Drink or hold.
92 Points, Wine Spectator – A delightfully rich and creamy expression of Cabernet that is intense and subtle, refined and graceful, with creamy oak framing the core of currant, blackberry, cedar and mocha. Ends with a dash of anise. Drink now through 2029.
92 Points, Jeb Dunnuck – The 2013 St. Supéry Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon displays a dark, inky color and opens with aromas of black cherries, blueberries and cassis followed by fresh violets and sweet spices. On the palate this full-bodied and layered with a lovely velvety, round texture. The finish shows nice length, leaving behind dark fruits and hints of sweet spices lingering. Accessible now, but will also drink well over the next decade.
91 Points, Wine Advocate – The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Vineyard is outstanding. A classic Cabernet aromatic profile of damp earth, cedar wood, crème de cassis and licorice is followed by a full-bodied, powerful, rich wine with ripe tannin, impressive concentration and overall equilibrium. This wine should evolve gracefully for 15-20 years.
90 Points, Wine Enthusiast – Robust black fruit forms around a dense, leathery core of concentration and richness before allowing room for softer, intertwined tannins to add structure and more depth. Chocolate marks the finish of this big, bold wine.
